Maureen is self-taught, and her first paintings in watercolor date back to the early 1990s when her work was both praised and criticized because of the unusual, and often opaque manner in which she uses the medium.  Her earliest works, Shadow of His Wings,Wings of Dawn, and New Beginnings were at one time labeled as "muddy" and "amateurish" by galleries,  and Maureen was disappointed to find that most galleries wouldn't even look at her work because she had no formal art education. "Go get some formal training and a CV and then come back and talk to us" was a familiar brush-off.

Although Maureen has yet to have her work featured in a gallery or magazine, the emergence of the internet has allowed her art to be admired by well wishers throughout the world.

Maureen D. Dean

Even though I'm a lot older now, it's taken me pretty much my whole life to learn that if you don't believe in yourself, no one else ever will.  Unfortunately, it's a lot easier to say than it is to do sometimes.  The internet really is the best thing that ever happened to struggling artists, especially when it comes to discovering others who genuinely appreciate your work.  I can't think of anything more wonderful than knowing someone else might find beauty or hope in one of my paintings, and when someone writes me from some far away country to tell me that one of my paintings is beautiful, or that they were moved by one of my videos, it makes it all worth it.
